RangeX experimental sites in Switzerland – eastern Swiss Alps

The Swiss field site of the RangeX warming experiment is situated on the Calanda massif in the Eastern Swiss Alps. The within-range control site Nesselboden is located at an elevation of 1400 m.a.s.l., the beyond-range site Calanda at 2000 m.a.s.l. just above the treeline. Both sites are calcareous perennial grasslands similar in exposure and grazed by cows in the summer months. Due to the steep elevation gradient, the two sites are only 2.1 km apart, making it easier to separate climatic effects from other environmental factors. Next to ibexes, chamoix and marmots, the Calanda is home to the oldest re-immigrated wolf pack in Switzerland.
